Dr. Stephanie Mancuso explains the types of stress, what happens when stress occurs in the body and how we can let go of  it TODAY.  Watch

STRESS, by Stephanie Mancuso, RD, DC, FICPA

We perceive life through our nerve system – our brain, spinal cord, and spinal nerves. Any stress to the nerve system whether it is physical stress (car accidents, slips, falls, sports injuries); emotional stress (death of a loved one, financial challenges, divorce, job loss); or biochemical stress (pollution, second hand smoke, food additives/preservatives, drugs), can trigger a misalignment in the spine and activate the “stress response”.

What happens to the body during a stress response?

  • increase in stress hormones like cortisol, adrenaline, and noradrenaline (adrenal fatigue, weight gain, low energy)
  • increase in heart rate
  • vasoconstriction and an increase in blood pressure (high blood pressure, hypertension)
  • increase in blood glucose (hyperglycemia, diabetes)
  • increase in blood lipids (hyperlipidemia, high triglycerides)
  • increase in blood cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia)
  • increased protein breakdown (loss of muscle mass and connective tissue, premature aging)
  • insulin resistance (weight gain)
  • increase in feelings of stress, fear, anxiety and depression
  • increase in the sensitivity of sensory systems, including those for pain
  • decrease in serotonin levels (depression)
  • decrease in short term memory, ability to concentrate and learn new material (attention deficit disorder)
  • decrease in cellular immunity (cancer, heart disease, viruses, etc.)
  • decrease in anabolic hormones like growth hormone, testosterone, luteinizing hormone (hormonal imbalance)
  • bone loss (osteoporosis)

Prolonged stress in a pregnant woman can cause an increase in fetal heart rate, a decrease in fetal oxygen supply, and increased irritability, restlessness, crying and digestive disorders in the infant. Studies reveal the long term effects of stress on the fetus’ developing brain and nervous system and a life long effect on stress-response patterns and stress related illnesses in adulthood. Remember, the baby’s nerve system foundation is laid in utero.

Chiropractic care removes interference and restores balance to the spine and nerve system so that the body can function as it is designed to – free of stress!
